Nate Beversluis Musician Bio

Composer, conductor, and pianist Nate Beversluis originally created SpanText because he found he had to write so many different versions of his bio for concert programs, job applications, websites, program books, and so on. He turned this problem into an entertaining feature of his own website. This example shows how five different text attributes can be embedded in a single page, including transformations on both the left and right side of most sliders. Nate Beversluis is an incredibly good jazz and classical a New York based conductor, pianist, and composer active in multiple genres which he will now proceed tediously to enumerate in a sea of detail that hopelessly swamps any reliable context for evaluating his activies and/or accomplishments one at a time. Beversluis is “one of the most dynamic and exciting conductors of his generation”, along with several thousand others in the country whose bios use exactly the same words. His interests as a composer include combining improvising musicians with chamber and symphonic ensembles. Examples can be heard in his jazz recording and publishing project, Waterproof Music, which has been on the verge of completion for many years now and will be released at some point during the next century. In additional to writing music, Nate enjoys creating unique contemporary arrangements of American Songbook classics for jazz artists and transcribing existing classical music for other instrumentations and ensembles. His arrangements and orchestrations have been performed by The Florida Orchestra, Orlando Philharmonic, Greensboro Symphony Orchestra, the Henry Mancini Insitute Orchestra, and Colorado Symphony with Hilary Kole. His catalog can be browsed and ordered online at Nate’s music has won awards from the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP) (of which he is a member), including several ASCAPlus Awards, the ASCAP Henry Mancini Award for Jazz Composition and the ASCAP Young Jazz Composers Award, as well as awards from Broadcast Music, Incorporated (BMI). He could probably win more awards, but he fails to apply for them on time, and in some cases doesn’t even hear about them to begin with.

Nate began his conducting career with Greensboro Symphony Orchestra as assistant, concerto and cover conductor to Dmitry Sitkovetsky, where he developed his own brand of riotously entertaining education and pops concerts for children and families. These concerts will be available to other orchestras starting in the 2017 – 2018 season through the production company he co-founded, Some Funny Symphony Company, which specializes in concerts for students, schools, and families. Nate loves working with young orchestras and is Music Director of Greensboro Symphony Youth Orchestra, with whom he recently recorded Taking it Home,
an album of American music, conducting from the piano. He has guest conducted all-state and youth orchestras of Indiana, Ohio, North Carolina, and Florida.

A native of Indianapolis, Nate was drawn to music of all kinds from a young age, learning to play the piano and later the violin, (though arguably achieving less-than-heroic mastery of the latter). He refused to practice Hanon exercises, hymns, or anything by Edward MacDowell.
Confounding one piano teacher after another, he learned by reading and playing from scores, listening to records, composing, and staying after school to extract wisdom from his school orchestra conductor, Richard F. Dennis, to whose memory he dedicates all his music education and youth orchestra work.
Even an abysmal academic record and numerous adamant admissions officers failed to prevent him from attending music school. He holds a degree in Jazz Studies from Indiana University, where he studied piano with Mike Lucas and Luke Gillespie. He also holds a graduate degree in Orchestral Conducting from CCM, where he was active as an opera and theater coach and accompanist and served as Associate Conductor for CCM’s Music Theater program and Assistant Conductor with Opera Theater and Music Festival of Lucca. He has also studied jazz piano with Phil DeGreg and Lynne Arriale and jazz composition with Vince Mendoza and Jack Smalley at the Henry Mancini Institute during its years as a summer festival in Los Angeles. During his student years he traveled the seas as a cabaret, jazz and show band pianist for Princess, Crystal, and Holland America lines, visiting six continents and ninety countries. In this setting he learned the standards of the American songbook they can rarely be learned today, playing styles of all kinds nightly with an international range of performers. He also won the dubiously credentialed yet impressively titled “Musician of the Year” Award from Crystal Cruises.

Emerging from this diverse training dizzy with hopes for real-world applications but short on actual job prospects, hHis early positions included Associate Artistic Director, coach and rehearsal pianist for Tri-Cities Opera. Finding himself temperamentally unsuited however to teaching Verdi one note at a time, unpopular with cast members who wouldn’t learn their words or music, and frequently unable to locate his car under the snow, an exit strategy was devised and a moving company’s services enlisted. He has worked as staff accompanist and Music Director for the University of Central Florida Conservatory Theatre and simultaneously as Assistant Music Director and pianist with the now-extinct Seaside Music Theater. His otherpatchy and sporadic academic positions have also included suspiciously brief periods as Assistant Professor and Music Director of Music Theatre at Elon University, where he also taught music theory, pop music repertoire, and served on a handful of committees the purposes of which he can no longer recall. He later served on the Conducting faculty as Adjunct Professor at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro School of Music, Theatre and Dance, where he also conducted the new music ensemble, Present~Continuous.

These professional activities enable his composing and jazz club habits, both of which have spun wildly out of control. He has played regularly at been caught moonlighting at venues including Heidi’s Jazz Club (Cocoa Beach, FL), Houston’s Restaurant (Orlando, FL)., and remains active as freelance jazz pianist and arranger. More recently he has played and conducted for Jeff Rupert and the Jazz Professors, among other guest conducting engagements with Orlando Philharmonic.

Nate has studied French in Paris, German at the Goethe Institut in Hamburg, and Italian in Lucca. (He also speaks excellent English.) In his free time he enjoys travel, literature, cooking, cats, and technology. He coded this interactive text tool in Javascript, and it is currently available as a WordPress plugin.
